Zusammenhänge zwischen Schülerunfällen und dem Sozialklima an Schulen
Relations between the Social Climate at Schools and Injuries of Students
2010, 63-75
Summary: Accidents are determined by the interplay between the characteristics of the actual cause of the accident, the person involved, and the environment in which the accident happens. In order to explore accidents at schools in more detail, this study examines the relationship between accidents occurred and the social climate at school, thereby assessing the peripheral institutional influences on accidents. For this purpose, schools in the German state of Hesse were selected by their number of accident notifications; 13 schools with below average, as well as 10 schools with above average frequencies were taken into account. In 88 classes, 1852 Students of the selected schools were asked to rate the social climate of their school class on a global scale. A linear regression analysis revealed that the rating of social climate in class emerged as a good predictor, explaining 49 % of variance in the number of accidents and 39 % of variance in accident costs. The perceived student-student-relationships were of particular significance here. Contrary to expectations, pupils’ social structural variables and individual experiences of accident victims did not play a role in the relationship between social climate and accident occurrences at schools. Assuming a causal relationship, measures to promote social competencies may not only improve school climate but also minimize school accidents.
