Summary: Tutoring and private lessons have only rarely been addressed in educational research. The present study investigates instructional features which have proven effective in face-to-face tutoring and asks to which extent these are also given in online tutoring, a special and modern form of tutoring. These features of present tutoring are time on task, individual reference norm orientation, promoting self regulated learning and promoting prior knowledge and learning strategies. The results show that there are no important discrepancies between the two forms of tutoring.
